Bill Bans Foreign-Made U.S. Flag Sales
Bill Bans Foreign-Made U.S. Flag Sales
U-Wire | February 15, 2008

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Old Glory must remain between sea and shining sea - if she wants to wave in Iowa, at least.

Rep. Ray Zirkelbach, D-Monticello, introduced a bill last week, now in subcommittee, that would make sure of it.

Under the bill, businesses could be fined as much as $625 for selling U.S. or Iowa flags made in other countries. Business owners or operators could also face up to 30 days in jail for selling a foreign-made flag.

Those flags commemorating U.S. Soldiers missing in action or those characterized as prisoners of war would also be regulated under the proposal.

Zirkelbach, an Iraq war veteran who also chairs the Veterans Affairs Committee, declined to comment on the bill until after it reaches the House floor, but locally, veterans lauded his efforts.

1. I am so incredibly proud that they are
wasting their time on stupid shit like this. Otherwise, they may be forced to deal with state infrastructure problems, school issues, real estate taxes, mass transit, RR infrastructure, water run off and ground water pollution, energy conservation, or really stupid shit like that.

2. The way things are going, the U.S. flag will be the ONLY thing made in the U.S.A.!
And, yeah, maybe we could build an economy on this. In fact, I'm sure we can stir up a "tulip craze" for U.S. flags abroad--both among those who love us (Colombia, Saudi Arabia), AND among those who don't (everybody else), where bonfires in front of U.S. embassies could become the thing, and the money from U.S. flag sales to U.S. flag burners would come right back to us. U.S. embassies could make it happen, too, if they try real hard--and do their bit for our only homemade product--by, say, using Peace corps volunteers to spy on people in Bolivia and getting the Bolivians all upset about their sovereignty, and sending rich Miamians with "suitcases full of U.S. cash" on CIA stings into Argentina and Venezuela, and holding U.S. embassy parties in celebration of fascist coups where the theatrical entertainment portrays the kidnapped president of the country as a gorilla. Those kinds of things get people to burn American flags, and should be encouraged, if we are going to survive the Bush Depression by manufacturing American flags. The U.S. military could also do its part--they could probably use ten thousand times their current U.S. flag purchases--and, hey, when they invade other countries and slaughter 1.2 million innocent people, American flags are at a premium among angry anti-U.S. crowds. And don't forget torture--we need to do more torturing of helpless prisoners to make people hate us more, and buy more U.S. flags to spit on, stomp on, pee on and burn.

We could maybe even re-legalize hemp--since it grows everywhere for free--and have ourselves a free-for-the-taking raw material. The poor could really get into this indigenous industry--and the corporate media could do features on old grannies in wheelchairs, whose Social Security and Medicare funds have been looted, "raising themselves up by their bootstraps" by sewing hemp flags with their old arthritic fingers. It brings tears to your eyes just thinking about it.

I like this bill. Make American flags in America, where only American flags are made!

Catchy!
