DES MOINES, Iowa — The Army will close a new recruiting center in suburban Des Moines and consolidate its operations with another battalion in Minneapolis, Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, said Thursday.
The decision comes after Iowa’s congressional delegation raised objections to the plan last year and convinced top military commanders to reconsider.
Grassley said he was disappointed the Army had not changed its mind.
“In fact, I’m asking for a written explanation because it still doesn’t make sense,” Grassley said Thursday. “We brought the discrepancy in the rationale of the recommendation to the attention of the secretary of the Army. ... I believe his decision is the wrong one for the Army and the American taxpayers.”
The $1.7 million building at Camp Dodge opened in June, and two months later military officials announced plans to deactivate the recruiting battalion.
