NORFOLK, Va. — The ships of the Nassau Expeditionary Strike Group are scheduled to deploy this week for maritime security operations in the Mediterranean and the Middle East, according to 2nd Fleet.

The strike group trained in recent months to deploy with the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, based at Camp Lejeune, N.C. But the Marines instead will deploy by air and fast sealift ship for a six-month tour on the ground in Afghanistan.

Cmdr. Herman Phillips, public affairs officer for 2nd Fleet, said the surface combatants and amphibious ships of the Nassau strike group will conduct maritime security operations.

The dock landing ship Ashland is scheduled to deploy Tuesday from Little Creek. The amphibious assault ship Nassau, the amphibious transport dock Nashville and destroyers Ross and Bulkeley are set to leave Wednesday from Norfolk. Cruiser Philippine Sea will deploy from Mayport, Fla.

Deployment details for the attack submarine Albany, also part of the strike group, had not been released by Monday afternoon.
