Health official gets dose of complaints

SALMAN PAK, Iraq — One of the two doctors working at the Salman Pak hospital ushers the crowd of visitors down a dim hallway and into a room where a few dozen bottles of medicine gather dust in a cabinet.

“We have no pharmacist,” he says.

“Well,” Lt. Col. Ryan Kuhn, asks, “how do we fix that?”

“We have to deal with the ministry,” the doctor says.

Kuhn, a tall 44-year-old Nebraskan, raises his voice for the benefit of the group stuffing itself into the room, an assemblage of local politicians and sheiks and, perhaps most significantly, a staff doctor from the Ministry of Health in Baghdad.
