More details have been released in the capture of a man who military officials say is a top operative in a network that mounted attacks on U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces and civilians.
A “top lieutenant” of what’s called the Hasnawi criminal network was captured Sunday in northern Baghdad, according to the U.S. military.
The operation was led by soldiers from Company C, 2nd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division.
The military says Arkan Hasnawi is the leader of a “Special Group,” the term used largely to describe rogue factions of Muqtada al-Sadr’s Mahdi Army.
The Hasnawi group is accused of attacks using explosively formed penetrators and mortars. It is also accused of kidnapping and murdering Iraqi civilians.
