Defenses fortified around Kosovo
Defenses fortified around Kosovo
By Kent Harris, Stars and Stripes
Mideast edition, Wednesday, February 20, 2008

French navy Capt. Bertrand Bonneau, a spokesman for Kosovo Force, said in a telephone interview Tuesday afternoon that troops had taken control of two border points that had come under attack by mobs earlier in the day.

“The situation is very quiet everywhere now,” he said.

He said the KFOR troops had responded “immediately” after a request by the United Nations Mission in Kosovo police for support. UNMIK police and Kosovo Police Service units generally are in charge of border points.

Elements from a Danish battalion were in control of one border point, Bonneau said, with forces based at Camp Nothing Hill at the other. There is a company of U.S. soldiers at that camp, but Bonneau said he was not aware of the makeup of the forces responding to the border.

Bonneau said the rest of the French sector in the north of the province, including the sometimes volatile city of Kosovska Mitrovica, had calmed down after initial problems Monday. Bonneau said peaceful demonstrations were welcome, but any violence “was unacceptable from the KFOR point of view.”
