COLA gets nominal raise for servicemembers in UK
Stars and Stripes
European edition, Wednesday, February 20, 2008

The cost-of-living allowance given to U.S. troops stationed in the United Kingdom increased Saturday, two weeks after a drop in the allowance.

Troops stationed in Lakenheath, Mildenhall, Menwith Hill and Alconbury are all included in the modest COLA boost, which will add about 49 cents a day to the paycheck of an E-1 living in the barracks, and about $2.05 a day to the check of a captain living off post with two dependents.

However, the increase comes during the last half of February — the shortest pay period of the year. That means that even though troops in the U.K. will get more COLA per day, they’ll see less of it on their end-of-month pay statements than they saw in the middle of February.

For example, an E-6 living off base with one dependent will see his daily allowance rise from $24.80 to about $26.18 per day.

But because there are only 14 days in this pay period, his COLA will appear to drop from $372 for the previous period to $366.49 this pay period.
