BAUMHOLDER, Germany — The theme of the day was expectation management.

“Where we’re going it’s dusty and it’s hot,” Col. Robert P. White told families of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division.

And there won’t be much of a chance for a soldier to curl up with his own laptop at the end of the day and connect with family through the wonders of wireless Internet. That’s because there is no wireless Internet capability where White’s soldiers will soon be operating in Iraq.

“It’s not like Baghdad,” White said.

Soldiers and families gathered at the Wagon Wheel Theater on Tuesday to hear the latest about the unit’s upcoming spring deployment, which will be the third for this Baumholder-based brigade. Though he did not name the location where soldiers would be operating, White said soldiers will be positioned some place south of Baghdad. He also gave families a snapshot of the living conditions there.
