Canadian troops to join Va. exercise

BLACKSTONE, Va. — About 300 soldiers from the Canadian Army Reserve will join troops from Virginia, New Hampshire and North Carolina on Friday for a training exercise at Fort Pickett.

The Virginia National Guard says the event will involve soldiers from Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, the New Hampshire National Guard, helicopters from the North Carolina National Guard, Navy units stationed in Norfolk and a Virginia National Guard aviation unit based in Sandston.

The exercise will simulate a peacekeeping operation in Afghanistan and will kick off with an air assault near a simulated village.

The training will be conducted in “Cherry Village.” It is named in honor of Staff Sgt. Craig Cherry of Winchester, a Virginia National Guard soldier killed in action in Afghanistan in 2004.
