Soldiers get a taste of riot control

SEOUL — Military police rioted Thursday on Camp Coiner’s baseball field.

And the only thing standing between the unruly mob and the other end of the field was a line of signal battalion soldiers carrying ballistic shields.

While the mention of sergeant’s time training brings images of PowerPoint slides and butcher blocks of paper to the minds of many troops, the soldiers of Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 41st Signal Brigade tried something different for their weekly training — riot control.

“We like it. Usually we do something else because we are signal. Today is something different, which may be useful — especially for those who do not have their combat patch,” Staff Sgt. Ilya Basyuk said.

Soldiers rotated between stations, where they were introduced to the use of riot shields and flex cuffs, learned to move in formations and conducted vehicle searches for explosives.
