Sun could cause AFN outages for two weeks

WASHINGTON — The TV schedule for AFN next week? Static.

Officials from the Defense Media Center announced that viewers of American Forces Network television may experience brief programming interruptions due to the spring “sun outage” period, which runs from Feb. 29 to March 12.

The problems occur every spring and fall.

As AFN satellites eclipse the sun, passing directly between it and the Earth, solar radiation overwhelms their broadcast signals.

The most severe outages are expected next week, between March 3 and 10.
