KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Michael McMillan, a fourth-grade teacher at Truman Elementary School, is also Sgt. Michael McMillan of the Missouri Army National Guard. And he’s preparing to deploy to Kosovo.

McMillan, 50, will leave soon for training and eventual peacekeeping duties with his unit in Kosovo, making him part of the largest unit deployed by the Missouri Army National Guard since World War I. Roughly 1,000 guardsmen are participating.

On Thursday, the fourth-graders surprised McMillan with a going-away chili-dog lunch, and on his last day of work Friday, he was surprised again with a patriotic send-off from the entire student body and a staff party.

“I’m excited, apprehensive and anxious,” he said as he sat with his wife, Kathy, at a table in the school library.

Kathy McMillan, a kindergarten teacher at Truman Elementary, also is a little anxious about the deployment. The couple’s 21-year-old son is serving in Iraq with the Missouri National Guard, and he has been injured by shrapnel from a roadside bomb.
