Iron Brigade gets sendoff before 3rd tour

Soldiers from 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division will receive a sendoff today in Baumholder, Germany, as they prepare for the brigade’s third deployment to Iraq.

About 4,000 soldiers are affected by this deployment.

The Iron Brigade first deployed to Iraq in 2003 and 2004. The brigade, along with the division, was extended for three months when violence erupted in Baghdad, earning a Presidential Unit Citation for its 15 months of combat action.

The brigade deployed to the region again in November 2005 for 12 months, serving as the Central Command theater reserve force in Kuwait. The brigade eventually was sent into Iraq when violence flared in that country and its soldiers served alongside the 1st Armored Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team in Anbar province.
