The Army is offering a $20,000 accessions bonus to medical and dental students who are accepted into the service’s F. Edward Hebert Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program.

The scholarship pays for the full cost of tuition, school related fees, books and a stipend of more than $1,900 a month, effective July 1, to students who are studying to become medical or dental professionals. The $20,000 critical skills accessions bonus is a one-time signing bonus given to qualified students who are accepted into the scholarship program after Jan. 4.

Students who take the bonus commit to a four-year active duty or reserve service obligation. Those four years can be served concurrently with any service obligations tied to the scholarship program.

Army officials hope the bonus will help attract top talent to Army medicine and dentistry, Col. Rafael Montagno, commander of the Medical Recruiting Brigade, said in a statement.

Army health care employs more than 73,500 active duty and 72,000 reserve soldiers who interact with an average of more than 200,000 patients a day, according to information from Recruiting Command.
