Navy releases report on sonar impact

LOS ANGELES — After a series of court losses, the Navy released a lengthy study on Friday looking at the potential harm to marine animals from its sonar and training exercises in Southern California.

The study looks at environmental issues surrounding every training mission from Los Angeles County to Baja California, and far out to sea.

The report estimates the exercises could expose more than 94,000 marine mammals each year to frequencies loud enough to potentially injure or kill as many as 30 marine mammals. This includes two gray whales, one blue whale, one sperm whale, 11 dolphins and 15 harbor seals.

The report is likely to be challenged by environmental groups.
