An airman was killed Thursday afternoon by a roadside bomb in Baghdad while on patrol, said Capt. Tom Wenz, an Air Force spokesman.

The Air Force has not officially released the identity of the airman, but local media in Springboro, Ohio, are reporting that Travis Griffin, 27, was the one killed.

“He died today, and it was an IED. That’s all we know,” said Bruce Moore, a local pastor who was asked by the Air Force to help locate Griffin’s family, in an interview with the Middletown Journal. “It was his fourth tour of duty. He was to return in 15 days.”

Springboro Chief of Police Jeff Kruithoff said the service also contacted him Thursday to locate Griffin’s next of kin to inform them of their loss.

An Air Force press release said the airmen killed was assigned to Multi-National Force Division-Baghdad.
