RAPID CITY, S.D. — A U.S. military B-1 bomber that caught fire Friday after landing at an American base in the Middle East was from Ellsworth Air Force.

Sgt. Steven Wilson of the Ellsworth public affairs office said the crew members are from Ellsworth, and all escaped safely.

The Air Force said the bomber was taxiing after landing at al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar and “was involved in a ground incident” and caught fire. The fire was contained, but no other details were available. The incident was under investigation.

There are four crew members on the B-1 bombers. Al-Udeid is the headquarters of all U.S. air operations in the Middle East.

Wilson said he could not comment on the incident until it has been investigated further.
