COLUMBUS, Miss. — Pilots at Columbus Air Force Base bid farewell this week to the T-37 Tweet, in a ceremony that sent 30 of the training jets into retirement.

“It’s like you’re happy and sad at the same time,” said retired Maj. Al Konkel, who racked up more than 4,000 flight hours in the small, jet-powered aircraft.

“I think it’s time we moved on though,” Konkel said. “The plane is getting old and I think it has become a little outdated.”

The T-37, which first flew in 1955, was used in the CAFB Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training program for more than 30 years.

~snip~

Replacing the T-37 is the T-6 “Texan II” turboprop airplane.
