Hurricane prep exercise begins Wednesday
Hurricane prep exercise begins Wednesday
Staff report
Posted : Monday Apr 7, 2008 18:03:53 EDT

The Army’s 2008 Hurricane Season Preparation exercise will take place Wednesday and Thursday at Fort Belvoir, Va., officials announced Monday.

Hosted by U.S. Army North, the exercise allows federal, state and local authorities to review and synchronize actions the Army would take in the event of a hurricane.

“The rehearsal provides a venue to bring together many of the key federal and state entities and go over our roles and responsibilities in disaster response in preparation for hurricane season,” said Col. Lou Vogler, chief of future operations for U.S. Army North.

Among the issues that will be addressed is ensuring that states have the equipment they need to respond to an emergency.

“The Army recognizes that because of the high operational tempo, some Army National Guard units may not have all of their equipment available for hurricane response,” said Col. Carl Turner, of the Army’s operations and readiness directorate.
