New helmet-mounted displays out this year

The Army is adding next-generation image generators and new, high-tech lightweight SR100 Helmet Mounted Displays designed to produce a better image for aviators training through virtual simulation, service officials with the Army’s PEO Simulation, Training and Instrumentation said Tuesday.

The new HMDs and EPX-50 image generators will begin fielding later this year on aviation training and simulation suites called Aviation Combined Arms Tactical Trainers designed to replicate combat conditions for pilots in training. The AVCATTs include two trailers and six cockpit configurations for aviators.

“The new IG (image generator) combined with the HMD is the whole picture. This is a higher-performing HMD, and at the same time, the IG will increase the fidelity of our terrain and models and put more entities into the training environment at one time than we have now,” said Army Lt. Col. Gary Stephens, product manger for Air and Command Tactical Trainers.

The HMDs and the new image generators, now being integrated by the Army, are the result of a multiyear deal with Rockwell Collins to upgrade all 23 AVCATTs across the service, Stephens said.

AVCATT training suites are already at or on the way to Army posts across the U.S., including Fort Rucker, Ala., Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., Fort Campbell, Ky., Fort Knox, Ky., and Fort Bliss, Texas.
