Shrine to WWII fallen could become just a memory

Willie McLeod was just a little guy.

Dave Brenner's family ran Brenner's Bakery in Seattle.

Merton Goldberg -- everyone called him Buddy -- was always ready to take a risk.

They are just a few of the 762 Seattle high school students who died in World War II. Their names are listed on the towering wall at the entrance of Seattle High School Memorial Stadium.

Now, nearly 60 years later, although nothing has been officially decided, it seems likely that Memorial Stadium and possibly the wall of names could be torn down under a plan for updating the Seattle Center. There's talk of transforming the space into a gracious entrance to the Center that includes an underground parking garage.

1. This is wrong, not because we want to glorify war but because these

young men were real people; brothers and fathers and sons and lovers and friends who gave their young lives for us all. What kind of a nation finds so little to revere about the amazing dedication of those who gave their lives so there can be another sports' center.
