FBI: Fugitive Marine arrested in Mexico

After three months on the run, the man accused of killing a pregnant Marine and burying her in his backyard has been captured.

FBI officials in Charlotte confirmed Thursday night that Cpl. Cesar Armando Laurean, 21, was arrested in Mexico. Further details on the arrest or pending extradition have not been released.

Laurean was charged with the murder of Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, a 20-year-old personnel clerk, in a case that shocked the Corps and drew international attention. The two worked together at Camp Lejeune, N.C., where Laurean allegedly raped Lauterbach.

The Ohio native disappeared Dec. 17, shortly before she was due to testify about her rape accusation. In January, police found the remains of the woman and fetus buried in a shallow grave behind Laurean’s home, but he was already on the run and believed to be in his native Mexico.

Earlier this week, Rep. Michael Turner, R-Ohio, accused the Corps of not doing enough to protect Lauterbach after she reported the rape. In March, Turner asked Commandant Gen. James Conway to provide further details about the Corps’ handling of the case.
