NCIS ends probe of missing Marine couple

ESCONDIDO, Calif. — The Navy has dropped its criminal investigation into the disappearance of a newlywed Marine couple.

The couple disappeared from their Escondido apartment on March 31, and relatives told police they suspected foul play. But police dropped the case five days later, saying it appeared the couple simply packed up and left.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service has now called off its search for Lance Cpl. Margaret McMahon-Reid and Pfc. George Reid II.

I Marine Expeditionary Force spokesman Mike Alvarez says the military agency, which investigates criminal cases, thinks the two are together and unharmed.

Navy investigators on Thursday said the two had been spotted April 1 on security videotape shopping at a convenience store in Hazelwood, Mo. The Marine Corps then officially classified it as an “unauthorized absence.”
