More officers left than needed

While the Air Force’s voluntary separation pay program for 2008 attracted only half of the 200 officers hoped for, other measures encouraging officers to leave active-duty service beat their goals, according to the Air Force Personnel Center.

By March 31, the service had been expecting about 100 officers to transfer to the Army, take a limited active-duty service commitment waiver or move into the Reserve or Air Guard.

When the programs reached the end of March, 236 officers had accepted the offers: 73 leaving for the Army in the Blue to Green effort, 158 taking service commitment waivers and five taking advantage of Palace Chase.

The Palace Chase and commitment waiver programs are closed for the year. However, officers can continue to apply for transfers through the Blue to Green program by contacting their unit’s military personnel flight. To qualify for Blue to Green, officers must be a lieutenant or captain and in a career field without transfer restrictions. Enlisted airmen can also apply for transfers to the Army.
