New Orleans battalion begins return from Iraq

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — About 600 Marines and sailors with a New Orleans-based Reserve battalion are returning from Iraq this week.

Members of 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines, began arriving at Camp Lejeune, N.C., on Monday following a seven-month deployment in Hadithah, a 2nd Marine Division spokesman said. The rest of the battalion will return by Wednesday to Lejeune, where the troops will be processed before heading home, Capt. Michael Armistead said.

The battalion conducted counterinsurgency operations and missions as provisional control of Iraq shifted to the Iraqi government.
