5 sentenced in Fort Sam contract bribery

Five people were sentenced Thursday in connection with a multimillion-dollar bribery scheme involving Army Medical Department contracts at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, according to a press release from the Justice Department.

Each of the five people pleaded guilty to one count each of conspiracy to defraud the government and for receiving a bribe as a public official. They are:

• Ignacio Ruelas Torres, 54, a former infrastructure coordinator and project officer with U.S. Medical Command at Fort Sam Houston.

Torres was sentenced to seven years in prison and three years of supervised release. He also was ordered to perform 500 hours of community service and pay $2.7 million in restitution and forfeiture of assets.

• Francisco Quinata Cruz, 60, a San Antonio contractor consultant.
