New head appointed for Md. National Guard

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley has named Brig. Gen. James Adkins as the head of the Maryland National Guard.

Adkins replaces Maj. Gen. Bruce Tuxill, who is retiring.

Adkins will oversee the Maryland Military Department. That includes the Maryland Army National Guard, Maryland Air National Guard, Maryland Emergency Management Agency and Maryland Defense Force.

Tuxill is scheduled to retire on June 1. A ceremony will be held on June 7 to formally install Adkins as the new adjutant general.

Adkins’ appointment must be approved by the state Senate.
