EL PASO, Texas — A U.S. soldier arrested in Mexico with an assault rifle and ammunition in his car remained in Mexican federal custody Tuesday.

Spc. Richard R. Medina, a soldier based at Fort Hood, was arrested Monday morning after reportedly making a wrong turn in El Paso and inadvertently driving across an international bridge into Ciudad Juarez.

He was being questioned by Mexican officials Tuesday.

Mexican authorities stopped Medina and found an AR-15 assault rifle, a .45-caliber handgun, several ammunition clips for the rifle, and a stash of ammunition. According to photos of items taken from his car, the scope-mounted rifle was in a silver gun case. Medina also had a box of knives.

Army officials at Fort Bliss, just outside El Paso, said Medina was on leave from his duties at Fort Hood and was traveling through El Paso en route to California.
