BAGHDAD — The military says a soldier has been killed during a gunbattle in a Shiite militia stronghold in Baghdad.

Military spokesman Navy Lt. Col. Steve Stover says the soldier was wounded by small-arms fire Wednesday afternoon and died later at a U.S. military hospital.

Stover says the attack occurred in the eastern neighborhood of New Baghdad.
