FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. — Retired Army Gen. Colin Powell will address the 2008 graduating class of Fort Campbell High School this May in a videotaped commencement speech.
The former Secretary of State once served as commander of the 2nd Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division, based at the post on the Tennessee-Kentucky border. Powell was chairman of the post’s schools, which all three of his children attended.
Since 2006, Fort Campbell-area schools have broadcast graduations online for deployed family members.
Almost 19,000 soldiers from Fort Campbell are currently serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.Principal Dave Witte said students wanted the general to attend, but he couldn’t fit it in his schedule. So Powell taped his speech Wednesday for the May 16 ceremony, according to his assistant Peggy Cifrino.
Witte said 116 seniors are currently scheduled to graduate and about 40 percent have family members deployed.
