Prosecutors put interpreter on stand in trial

WHEELER ARMY AIRFIELD, Hawaii — Military prosecutors are expected to call an Iraqi Arabic language interpreter during the court-martial of a Hawaii-based soldier accused of killing an unarmed Iraqi last year.

Essa Ahmed flew to Hawaii from Iraq to testify in the court-martial underway at Wheeler Army Airfield.

Ahmed was an interpreter for the platoon headed by Sgt. 1st. Class Trey Corrales, who is on trial for premeditated murder and two other charges.

Other witnesses have already testified Ahmed was at the scene of the shooting in the backyard of a house near Kirkuk in northern Iraq.

Corrales’ platoon raided the house to look for insurgents they suspected of planting roadside bombs.
