KANEOHE BAY, Hawaii — Buried under a thick, heavy, armored vest bulging with pouches and straps, Sandra Deheza managed to smile as she pushed a stroller that carried 9-month-old daughter Andra.

Deheza — clad in ballistic sunglasses, beefy helmet and a set of desert camouflage utilities — had just fired several rounds from an M16 rifle at Kaneohe Marine Corps Base range April 12. Somehow, she hit the target and was all smiles.

Carrying the weight of the “battle rattle,” she made her way from the range with scores of wives and girlfriends of the men of 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment.

“It’s a little bit like when I was pregnant,” said Deheza, wife of Alpha Company’s 1st Sgt. John Murphy, of the added bulk and weight.

Next stop: The gas chamber.
