Army to Launch Sats After 50 Year Lull
Army to Launch Sats After 50 Year Lull
April 28, 2008
Military.com|by Colin Clark

The U.S. Army plans to build and launch into orbit a constellation of satellites for the first time in roughly 50 years. And it plans to build the cluster of eight miniature communications satellites within as little as nine months, defense officials told Military.com.

The roughly $5 million effort is part of the Army's commitment to what is known as Operationally Responsive Space. The joint program, based at Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., was created in May 2007 after years of vigorous prodding by Congress to get the U.S. military to change how it conceives of, builds and flies satellites.

For the Army, this is "a pathfinder project to fulfill an urgent need for beyond line of sight communications capability," said James Lee, chief of strategy and policy for Space and Missile Defense Command in Huntsville, Ala.

Lee's office set up a task force in March to decide how the Army should tackle the deployment of space assets. And the money for the service's satellite effort is coming from Army coffers, Lee added.

The requirement for the bantam-weight sats -- which measure about 30 inches square and weigh around five pounds -- was generated by a combatant commander whom Lee declined to identify. But you can get some idea who it is by the mission he described for the so-called "cubesats."

4. So, you believe whatever shit the CT threads and blogs spew?
Like those "stolen" nukes from North Dakota that were going to be used for some kind of "Red Flag" attack in the U.S. on Labor Day weekend?

Don't you think that if "they" wanted to put "nuke platforms" in space, they'd just throw it into one of those classified payloads that don't get press releases?
Or would that be too easay or make too much sense?

5. Too essay or too assay, which is it, writing or mining?
NOTHING spewed by this Misadministration is believable, and anyone who thinks it is isn't thinking clearly.

6. please forgive the typo...
there's a lot of sand build up in the keyboard, two dust storms this week, and it's only Wednesday, but good on you using the google to determine one use for assay.

I just don't see why, if the administration wanted to launch "nuke platforms" into orbit, that they would go to all the trouble of forcing the Army to put out a big press release about 5 pound microsats when they could just put it on one of the ten or so orbital launches every year out of Vandenberg that nobody ever hears about....
well that and with the global launch capabilities of surface ships, subs, and aircraft, it would also seem kinda redundant to have an orbital platform...(and then you'd have to figger out how to get a special weapons technician into orbit for the regular maintenance so the thing would be reliable, etc....)

What's got yer panties in a bunch anyway? That someone pointed out how idiotic your nook CT theory was with a drop of common sense? Cuz when you look at it, your story makes that Labor Day weekend "Red Flag" attack theory look so sane and clear-headed.

8. My bad,

I had no idea that the level of paranoia required to find errant nuclear weapons in every story in the news also comes with a resolute intolerance for taking the occasional colloquial license with the written word.
You must have one hell of a time correcting speech in an auto factory every day.
Don't forget to burn a few copies of Tom Sawyer on your way home.
While I cannot fathom why your distate for bad English would require a disbelief in logic, your opening post here was certainly a testament to the latter.

Before I forget, with this being the Veterans board and all; thank you for your service.
