Companies submit LCS bids

Both competitors in the Navy’s Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) program submitted their plans to build more ships by the May 30 deadline.

“The Navy is in receipt of proposals from Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics,” said spokesman Lt. Cmdr. John Schofield. “The Navy will review these proposals and hopes to make a contract award later this year.”

At stake are three more LCS contracts to award, one from the 2008 budget and two out of the 2009 request being considered by Congress. The Navy plans to award the winner of the new competition two ships.

Each company already is building one LCS. Lockheed hopes to deliver its ship, the Freedom, in the fall, while General Dynamics is working to deliver the Independence by the end of this year.
