Internet grocery shopping coming

RICHMOND, Va. — Commissary officials hope to test full-fledged Internet grocery shopping in Europe, Iraq and Afghanistan early next year, said Richard Page, interim director and chief operating officer of the Defense Commissary Agency.

Goods will be shipped through the Military Postal Service Agency, he said.

After the initial test, he said, the program will expand to the Far East. “Then we would pick fulfillment centers in the United States,” further expanding the program, he said.

While the timeline is not set in stone, Page said, he feels confident that the initial testing will start in early 2009.

David S.C. Chu, undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness, said he hopes commissary and industry officials will address how to ensure a dispersed population still has access to the commissary.
