Editorial: Deployment time for all

Army personnel specialists are scouring the ranks to find soldiers with nonexistent or light deployment histories so they can take their turns in the combat zones.

Seven years into the war, it’s about time.

There are tens of thousands of soldiers “light on the right,” as soldiers say of others who have not earned a combat patch. Getting those soldiers, and others whose time in the war zone is limited, into the fight eases the burden on those who have already endured multiple deployments.

To date, more than 500,000 soldiers have served at least one war tour and more than 200,000 have pulled at least two.

Deployments put great strains on Army families. And studies show repeat deployments increase the likelihood of mental health problems for soldiers.
