Nearly 50 Marines with a Rhode Island-based Reserve company have been mobilized for active duty for a year that will include a seven-month deployment in Iraq.
About 45 Marines with General Support Motor Transport Company in Providence were mobilized Sunday and are heading to California Wednesday for pre-deployment training, according to a Marine Corps Forces Reserve statement.
The Marines have trained at their home training center and at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va. They will wrap up their training at Camp Pendleton, Calif., before heading to Iraq with forces from the I Marine Expeditionary Force.
The company’s primary mission is to provide medium- and heavy-lift capability for ground transportation. It provides regular rotations of Marines to support operations in Iraq. The last batch of Marines with the company to deploy returned in September 2007.
General Support Motor Transport Company is made up of about 150 active and Reserve Marines from New England and is part of the larger Red Bank, N.J.-based 6th Motor Transport Battalion.
