Guard misses May recruiting goal
Guard misses May recruiting goal
Staff report

The Army National Guard missed its recruiting goal in May, the Defense Department announced Tuesday, marking the first time this year the component has fallen short of a monthly target.

The Guard brought in 5,311 soldiers in May, 6 percent short of the goal of 5,635. But because of its strong showing in previous months, the May shortfall didn’t impact the Guard’s year-to-date goal of 40,610. The component has recruited 44,466 soldiers this year, 109 percent of the year-to-date goal. The goal for the year is 63,000.

The other two components, the active Army and Army Reserve, exceeded their recruiting goals for May.

The active Army brought in 5,568 recruits, 101 percent of the goal of 5,500. The Army has exceeded every month goal since October, the beginning of the fiscal year, and has now recruited 101 percent of its year-to-date goal of 41,750 soldiers. The annual goal is 80,000 soldiers.

The Army Reserve reported 2,893 new soldiers, 107 percent of the goal of 2,697. The Reserve, which is aiming for 26,500 new soldiers this year, has rebounded from an uneven recruiting year by exceeding its goals for the past four straight months.
