More than 900 soldiers and airmen with the Indiana National Guard have been activated for what is expected to be a “long flood fight,” according to a press release from the state Guard bureau.

Areas across southern Illinois received up to 10 inches of rainfall Friday and Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Guardsmen have been working since then to provide relief to stranded citizens, mobilizing more than 90 vehicles for the task, according to the press release.

Sandbagging machines and operations are at work in Elnora, Terra Haute, Linton and Vincennes. Water trailers have been provided to numerous communities where clean water is scarce, and 25 soldiers have reported to Vigo County to assist with security operations.

Food is being delivered by UH-60 Blackhawk to the city of Worthington, which has been completely cut off by flood waters.

Joint Task Force 81, headquartered in Indianapolis, is providing command and control for the units providing flood relief assistance.
