Reserve stands up 2nd F-22 associate wing

One of the Air Force’s historically renowned units will soon fly the service’s most advanced fighter.

The Air Force Reserve’s 301st Fighter Squadron, once part of the “Red Tails” of the Tuskegee Airmen’s 332nd Fighter Group, will relocate from Luke Air Force Base, N.M., to Holloman Air Force Base, according to an Air Force press release.

The 301st will form an associate unit with the 7th and 9th Fighter squadrons of the 49th Fighter Wing, flying the F-22 Raptor.

When all the changes are complete in 2010, the Reserve will have established the 44th Fighter Group with 260 airmen assigned, the press release said. The reservists will fly and maintain the Raptors with their active-duty counterparts, and the 49th will own the aircraft.

This will be the second F-22 associate wing. The 477th Fighter Group was established at Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, in October 2007.
