3 units to be redesignated as missile wings

GREAT FALLS, Mont. — The 341st Space Wing at Malmstrom Air Force Base will be redesignated as a missile wing effective July 1.

The unit will be renamed the 341st Missile Wing, said base spokesman 1st Lt. Justin Brockhoff. In addition to the Malmstrom unit, the 90th Space Wing at F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Wyo., and the 91st Space Wing at Minot Air Force Base, N.D., will be redesignated as missile wings.

All three wings carry out intercontinental ballistic missile missions.

“The intent of making the switch back to missile wings is to place a re-emphasis on the importance of the ICBM missile force,” Brockhoff said.

Malmstrom was home to the 341st Missile Wing in the 1990s until 1997, when Strategic Air Command was deactivated and the missile wings were reassigned to Air Force Space Command.
