The woman convicted of forging checks so she could take her husband’s money while he was deployed to Iraq has been sentenced to 30 days in the workhouse and 10 years of probation.

Dana Kieser, who in May was convicted of two felony counts of check forgery, was sentenced Thursday in Ramsey County, Minn., by 2nd District Judge James Clark. She also was ordered to pay restitution, but the amount has not been determined.

Kieser received the same sentence for each of the two counts against her. The sentences will run concurrently, said Janet Hafner, executive coordinator at the Office of the Ramsey County Attorney.

The workhouse, run by Ramsey County, is like a local jail, Hafner said. The workhouse has eligibility requirements that determine if a defendant qualifies for a work permit or home monitoring during his or her sentence, Hafner said.

Staff Sgt. John Kieser was in Iraq with his Minnesota National Guard unit when he learned that Dana Kieser withdrew the contents of two accounts in his name, took the almost $25,000 and used the money to buy a house in a different state. Dana Kieser moved the couple’s two children and her two teenagers from a previous relationship to that home in Fargo, N.D., and sold the family’s house in Maplewood, Minn.
