U.K. to send extra troops to Afghanistan

LONDON — Britain’s military says it will deploy extra troops to Afghanistan.

The British Broadcasting Corp. is characterizing the deployment as modest and says it would involve a few hundred personnel.

A Defense Ministry spokeswoman said Friday that the BBC’s reporting was “broadly right” but that an official announcement was due next week.

She did not provide any additional details and spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military policy.

There are now 7,800 British military personnel in Afghanistan. Most of them are in the country’s troubled south.
