Four Marines killed in Afghanistan
Four Marines killed in Afghanistan

TWENTYNINE PALMS, Calif. — Four Marines from a unit based at Twentynine Palms were killed in a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan, the military reported Saturday. A fifth Marine was wounded.

No details were released about the bombing and the troops’ identities were not revealed pending notification of family members.

The attack, in Helmand Province in southwest Afghanistan, was the worst single attack on U.S. or coalition forces in Afghanistan this year. It came a day after U.S. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates reported that the number of coalition soldiers killed in action in Afghanistan exceeded the death toll in Iraq for the first time last month.

The Marines, with the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, arrived in Afghanistan in April to help train and mentor struggling Afghan national police units in Farah and Helmand provinces.

The U.S. death toll in Afghanistan now stands at least at 44 so far this year.
