Scientists and cadets at the Air Force Academy want to harness the Earth’s oceans as an energy source.

The academy’s aeronautics department received a $285,619 grant from the National Science Foundation to continue its research to build what it is calling underwater windmills.

Stefan Siegel, who will oversee the project, said underwater turbines could produce 25 percent more energy than do windmills above ground.

Siegel said the technology could be used to power cities and military bases along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts.

“Seventy-five percent of the (U.S.) population is located 100 miles from (an) ocean and we have plenty of military bases pretty close, as well,” he said.
