Shoulder-fired rocket launcher being developed
Shoulder-fired rocket launcher being developed

The Corps hopes to replace a shoulder-fired rocket launcher it has fielded since the 1980s, saying its replacement would be lighter, offer superior range and fire safely in enclosed areas.

Marine officials signed a $17.7 million research and development contract in August with weapons contractor Nammo Talley for the Shoulder-launched Multipurpose Assault Weapon II. The deal could be worth up to $51.76 million if the Corps is satisfied after testing, said Mike Woodson, project leader with Marine Corps Systems Command.

The Corps solicited proposals for the project in November, asking contractors to improve upon a reusable, tube-based launcher used to destroy bunkers, light armor and cement walls, most recently in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Woodson said SysCom is planning to purchase 1,717 SMAW IIs if the design is approved — enough to replace the existing arsenal.

“It’s essentially a one-for-one replacement,” he said. “Your primary users are your infantry rifle companies, your combat engineer companies and your companies.”
