EL PASO, Texas — A Marine reservist has been shot to death in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, the Corps confirmed Wednesday.

Lance Cpl. Gustavo Zubia Lopez, 20, was found dead Sept. 12 in the violence-plagued border city across the Rio Grande from El Paso, said Capt. Nathan Braden, a Marine spokesman with Marine Forces Reserve in New Orleans.

Zubia was not on active duty at the time of his death, and was not prohibited from traveling to Mexico, where authorities have been in a bloody struggle to wrest control from warring drug cartels.

Zubia's mother, Ernestina Rodriguez, told the El Paso Times that her son had gone to Juarez to have his vehicle brakes replaced. She said he was last seen being arrested by local police following a minor traffic crash. Zubia's family also told the newspaper that he also had been shot in Juarez in August.

More than 800 people have been killed in Juarez this year amid a growing drug cartel war.
