OCEANSIDE, Calif. — A military trial began Monday in Twentynine Palms, Calif., for a sergeant accused in the shooting death of another Marine.

Sgt. Lincoln J. Crall, of Boulder, Colo., is facing one count of manslaughter in the Jan. 20 death of Lance Cpl. Cameron M. Babcock, 19, at the Marine Air-Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms.

Babcock, of Plymouth, Ind., was in the barracks at the desert training base when he was fatally shot in the chest with a privately owned weapon, according to Marine Corps officials. He was an Iraq combat veteran.

Crall, who is assigned to 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, was charged in April with one count of manslaughter under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The general court-martial is expected to run through Wednesday, said 1st Lt. Curtis Williamson, a 1st Marine Division spokesman at Camp Pendleton.
