Add “vice presidential nominee protector” to the Coast Guard’s long list of duties.
Secret Service agents aboard two 25-foot Defender-class patrol boats — typically reserved for oceanic patrols — stood guard in the “placid waters of Lake Lucille in Wasilla, Alaska,” on Sept. 11-13 while Republican Gov. Sarah Palin was home for a visit, according to Coast Guard News.
“We are a deployable unit and we augment other services when asked,” said Lt.j.g. Christine Young, the officer in charge of the Palin security mission. “This is pretty exciting for us. This is something of a new skill for us to develop and we are happy to assist the Secret Service.”
Locals stood on the docks of a nearby hotel to catch a glimpse of the celebrity governor and maybe even ABC reporter Charles Gibson conducting an interview during her two-day visit.
After Palin returned to the campaign trail, the two patrol boats returned to their home port in Anchorage, according to the article.
