NCO promotions to reach 4-year high

More than 7,800 active-component soldiers will be promoted to the ranks of sergeant through sergeant major in October, the biggest monthly stripes bonanza in nearly four years.

Cutoff scores and senior NCO sequence numbers issued by the Human Resources Command in mid-September authorize 6,383 advancements to the junior NCO ranks, and 1,427 to the senior grades.

The unusually large authorization for staff sergeants and sergeants is driven by the Army’s expanding end strength and reorganization of combat units into modular brigades.

Totals by rank are: 108 to sergeant major, 300 to master sergeant, 1,019 to sergeant first class, 2,161 to staff sergeant and 4,222 to sergeant.

Sergeant major promotions will come from the June 2007 list, leaving only 76 names on that roster. A new E-9 list containing 771 names was released in August and is available for promotions in fiscal 2009.
